Poetry-Don’t tell me to let it go

Don’t tell me to “let it go”

Which part are you referring to?

The person?

The act?

The crimes?

The loss?

The agony?

The trauma?

When you tell me to just “let it go”

Do you mean that as a whole?

All the millions of tiny parts?

Do you mean one man?

Or that other man?

Or those who supported him?

When you tell me to “let it go”

Do you want me to stop telling my story for you?

Do you not realize that my story is protecting children?

Do you not see that I am educating others?

Do you not see that I am creating a safe place with my truth?

When you tell me to “let it go”

How do you know on how many levels I HAVE?

How do you know how MUCH of it I HAVE let go?

How do you know it is in my best interest TO let it go?

Don’t tell me to let it go.

Don’t tell me to forgive.

You have no idea where I am on my healing journey

Unless you ask.

Instead of telling…

Try listening…

When you REALLY listen

You won’t judge

What I’ve been capable of letting go

And what I haven’t been able to.

It won’t matter as it never should have.

When you tell me to “let it go”

This is what I hear:

I don’t care.

I don’t validate your suffering.

Shut up.

I’m tired of listening to you.

What you are saying doesn’t matter.

You don’t matter. What happened to you doesn’t matter.

Get over it.

I don’t care about your mission to protect others.

I don’t care about your actual being or healing.

I don’t care about anything but me.

It’s a passive statement.

It’s a flippant statement.

It’s an invalidating statement.

It’s an infuriating statement.

It’s a damaging statement.

Don’t tell me to “let it go”

Stop telling me to let it go

Or I will let YOU go

While I continue to battle these demons

ON MY OWN

  1. When someone says this, I say to them, “It is impressive of you to let my abuse, and my abuser go, particularly since, it didn’t happen to you.”
They look at me funny, thinking, “Did she just insult me?”
Nah, I didn’t. I don’t insult people. I just tell them their truth when they refuse to see it.
